Piazza Cinque Giornate is one of the most beautiful piazzas of the city of Milan, placed near Porta Vittoria (already known as Porta Tosa). The elements that characterize it, is the great monument of the Cinque Giornate di Milano, constructed by Giuseppe Grandi, inaugurated the 18th March 1895.
Now where the square stands, once stood the Porta Tosa: established as a branch of Porta Venezia, which acquired greater importance over the centuries, being rebuilt in the first half of the 19th century. After ‘the five days’ of 1848 and the unification of Italy, the door was renamed Victoria to commemorate the victory of Radetzky and the Austrians.
Twenty years after the unification (1881) Giuseppe Grandi won the competition for the construction of the monument of ‘The five Days’ which was practically completed in December 1894. Unfortunately Grandi died before the official inauguration of the monument on the 18th March 1895, the same day that ‘the Five Days’ initiated 47 years earlier. The arch of the gate was demolished soon after to give greater prominence to the monument.
