Bargecchia, famous for the fact that Puccini often visited his friends there and where he apparently for the first time heard the sounds of the church bells that were later used in the first act of his piece called ‘Tosca’. The village is situated amongst olive groves in the hills above Massarosa that over look the Lake Massaciuccoli. The actual church of San Martino was constructed in 1800 on a ruin of a pre-existing structure, still visible today, dating back to the XIII century.
The church tower was renovated in 1878, after the original tower collapsing at the end of the VI century. The famous bells were added in 1885; by frequent visits, Puccini certainly heard the sound of those bells on several occasions. It was this precise historical union with the grand composer that the church bells were not removed and smelted for the manufacturing of ammunition during the Second World War.
The piazza next to the church has two small bars and just around the corner there is a wonderful restaurant that offers exquisite cuisine, both local and regional flavours, with indoor and outdoor seating. Bargecchia cannot be called a village, but instead villas scattered on the hillside.
The villa is approximately 350sqm which includes a living area with a fireplace, dining room, separate kitchen, five bedrooms, six bathrooms and a spa with a Jacuzzi and sauna. The villa is surrounded by 15 000sqm of terrain, mainly flat with a well maintained garden, fruit trees, olive grove and a swimming pool measuring 14x6m with an outdoor relaxation area.
